Christmas Eve is celebrated in Costa Rica by families coming together to make a special dinner in anticipation of Christmas Day. Traditionally, the meal is made of pork leg and tamales which is derived from corn, a staple from the American Indian prior to the Spaniards arrival. Tres Leches Cake is also a well known tradition served at many holiday tables. It is the "cake of three milks" and is very creamy, smooth and served chilled.
Costa Rica families have their "portal" or manger scene awaiting the stroke of midnight when Baby Jesus is placed in the manger to symbolize his birth. Families in Costa Rica decorate cypress trees with lights and balls as part of the festivities.
Baby Jesus brings gifts to boys and girls while they are sleeping on Christmas Eve also called "Noche Buena" which are to be opened in the presence of family on Christmas morning of December 25th.
