Playa Grande is just north of Tamarindo, in the Guanacaste region of western Costa Rica. This quiet area is home of Parque Nactional Marino Las Baulas, the most important nesting site of the giant leatherback sea turtle. Due to strict laws protecting these gentle creatures, Playa Grande has remained virtually unchanged by the urbanization along the rest of Costa Rica's "Gold Coast." This 5 km stretch of light sand beach, backed by a large mangrove estuary remains the quiet, safe habitation to many nesting birds, elusive wildlife, and the great giant leatherbacks.
